"All have sinned and come short of the glory of God"
A sermon at my church got me thinking that maybe you are born gay. As a Christian, I had long held the belief that homosexuality was an abnormality (don't get offended because it is a biological abnormality otherwise the human race would be extinct) that was somehow developed. From a scientific standpoint, it's difficult to understand how one could sexually perfer the same sex over the opposite when biology creates strong urges to the opposite sex.
Given that I am a gen X-er, I am quite acclamated to peaceful co-existence with homosexuals. I've had gay friends, roommates, and co-workers with zero issue over the past couple of decades. They way I feel is, I am no more entitled to questioning their bedroom behaviors as they are mine. After all, I did manage to have a child out of wedlock and make some other rather poor decisions in my day. I admitted that I was behaving sinfully.
When it came to my religion, I was open about being a Christian. It never offended anyone, they were aware that Christianity meant that I felt homosexual acts were sinful. If there ever was any tension in a moment it was over the "born gay" debate. This debate has been a soundboard in our political culture most notably in the last 20 years. Should gay marriage be illegal? Should homosexuals be permitted to adopt? When it came down to it, I simply didn't feel homosexuals were born gay.
That is, until yesterday. According to the Bible, you are born a sinner. If you think about it, the meaning can be easily interpreted as you are born with sinful tendencies. What does that mean? Well, I don't want to speak for God, so I am in no way an expert but I would think that it means you are born with certain tendencies and urges. Those tendencies would be to sin but in my opinion, since everyone is different, this would be varying tendencies. Some people may have sexual tendencies that are hard to overcome (heterosexual promiscuity included), some may have violent tendencies to overcome, some may be prone to lying or stealing, and some may be prone to jealousy and hate. Regardless of where you come from, perhaps certain urges are already there.
In my opinion, being "born a sinner" means that you are born into an imperfect nature that predisposes you to urges and temptations. I believe the homosexuality is one of them. So yes, I do believe you can be born gay. In the same way I believe you can be born dishonest, violent, promiscuous, or envious. Does that mean it's okay? Due to my Christian beliefs, I believe no sin is okay including my own. Thankfully, Jesus Christ died for my sins and everyone else's too.
Bottom line: Homosexuals are no more sinners than anyone else. However, it doesn't mean that Christians will simply accept it as a "good way to live". Instead, they will continue to highlight that Jesus hates the sin but loves the sinner.
Anyway, this is an open debate. Keep in mind, I don't go to Westboro nor does it accurately represent Bible believing Christianity. This is not a forum to bash Christianity or gays. It's a forum to discuss the "born gay" issue.
CoH!!! I will be delete happy!!!
